Long Chen

I work on AI and computational imaging, with a particular focus on medical imaging AI, underwater imaging AI, and brain-inspired computing. My research explores efficient, robust, and intelligent visual perception models for challenging imaging scenarios.

Bio

I am currently a researcher at Imperial College London, working with Prof. Declan O’Regan and Prof. Wenjia Bai. Before joining Imperial, I was a Research Fellow at University College London with Prof. Matt Clarkson and Dr Thomas Dowrick, and a member of the UCL WEISS Centre, led by Prof. Danail Stoyanov. I completed my PhD at the University of Leicester under the supervision of Prof. Huiyu Zhou and Prof. Junyu Dong. My research interests lie in AI and computational imaging, with a particular focus on medical imaging, underwater imaging, and brain-inspired computing.

Research Interests

My research interests include medical imaging, underwater imaging, and brain-inspired computing.

Medical Imaging

Cardiovascular Imaging: AI models for cardiovascular imaging, including 3D modelling and analysis of cardiac anatomy, function, and aortic morphology, as well as disease progression prediction to support clinical decision-making and surgical planning.
Image-Guided Surgery: AI-driven imaging and guidance technologies for targeted, less invasive, and more effective surgical interventions, aiming to improve patient recovery and support clinical translation.

Underwater Imaging

Underwater Vision: Focuses on robust visual perception in challenging underwater environments, including object detection, image enhancement, and scene understanding.
Underwater Robotics: Explores perception-driven robotic systems for underwater inspection, navigation, and autonomous operation in complex marine environments.

Brain-Inspired Computing

Spiking Neural Networks: Focuses on biologically inspired, event-driven, and sparsely activated neural computation. By addressing the growing energy consumption challenges of large-scale AI models, particularly LLMs, SNNs offer a promising pathway toward energy-efficient learning and inference, as well as low-power visual perception.
Efficient AI for SNNs: Develops pruning, compression, knowledge distillation, and lightweight neural architectures to enable efficient and deployable Spiking Neural Networks for robotics, UAVs, AUVs, and other resource-constrained platforms.
